Otago Polytechnic Design student Kate Weith wants to show the world how awesome her degree is.

Kate, who grew up in Timaru, is in her third and final year of a Bachelor of Design (Communication).

“I chose Communication Design because I want to do the creative things I love but be able to apply myself in a way that has purpose, meaning and impact on the world around me.

“I would like to focus on film, editing and animation. I also really enjoy playing with typography and designing it in a way that is engaging and effective.”

Kate, who is in her third year of a Bachelor of Design (Communication), says her final project involves collaborating with a classmate to create videos and social media branding for the Design Communications department.

“I want to highlight the viability of a degree in Design, focusing on the wide range of career choices and opportunities that are a result of a Design (Communication) degree.

Basically, I just want to show the world how awesome my degree is and the special nature of Otago Polytechnic’s relationships with the Dunedin community.

Kate recently returned from a four-month trip to New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, where she studied Graphic Design.

“I was fortunate to take part in a couple of exhibitions and network with fellow students, with whom I am still in contact.

“I can honestly say that studying abroad was the best decision I have made in my life.”

Use your creativity and vision to communicate original and exciting ideas. During this hands-on degree, you'll learn to tell stories through still and moving image, text and interactive media. You'll develop industry-ready skills and use project-based learning to apply them to community- and client-driven projects that have a focus on positive social and environmental change. You can choose to specialise in areas such as graphic design and typography; illustration, animation and character design; UX for game design; visual design for games; 3D modelling and world building; game narratives and interactive fiction; web design and mobile app design; film and photograph. A work-based learning option is available for those with prior experience.
